THE BORONDA FAMILY

Jose Canuto Boronda
4x Great Grandfather
Son of Manuel Boronda and Gertrudis Higuera

My ancestors, the Higuera, Boronda, and Deleissegues families not only played a very pivotal role in the shaping of the Central Coast, they also played a very pivotal role in shaping the values of who I am today.

Manuel Boronda and Maria Gertrudis Higuera were my 5x Great Grandparents. Manuel, the family patriarch, was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and came to Alta California around 1790. He arrived from Mexico as a Spanish and was a member of oe of the earliest expeditions of Alta California. He worked as a carpenter and as a teacher in San Francisco where he helped build adobe structures at the Mission and the Presidio.

Manuel Boronda and Gertrudis Higuera first son, Jose Canuto Boronda, my 4x Great Grandfather, was a soldier at Monterey as well as Missions San Antonio, San Miguel, and San Juan Bautista. He went on to marry Maria Francisca Castro and they had nine children.

The first of the children, Maria Boronda, died a month after her birth in 1817. A few years later in 1820, Jose Canuto and Maria Francisca gave birth to their second child Maria Concepcion "Chona" Boronda.

Maria Concepcion Boronda was later married to the French Sea Captain Oliver Deleissegues, my 3x Great Grandparents.

Maria acquired the land patent to Rancho Potrero de San Luis Obispo in 1842. This land grant encompassed over 3,500 acres in present day San Luis Obispo and encompassed what is today Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Maria Concepcion Boronda and Captain Oliver Deleissegues' first son, Alexander Deleissegues (Baptised at San Juan Bautista) married Eugenia Durazo, my 2 x Great Grandparents. They went on to give birth to my Great Grandfather, Alexander J. Deleisssegues in 1880. Alexander lived until 1970.

His marriage to Hilda Deleissegues gave birth to a daughter Virginia Patricia Deleisegues who went on to marry a local native Salinan Indian named Edward Joseph Pierce, my grandparents.

They gave birth to my mother, Toni Jean Pierce, so named after the San Antonio Mission that was so important to our family.

And as a reminder and tribute to our family legacy, I was named after Mission San Miguel Arcangel.
